Florida Statute 683.01 -- legal holidays; special observances
Florida HB 6007 - by Michael Greico (D Miami-Beach) Co-sponsors: Hinson, Driscoll.  (Would remove birthdays of Robert E. Lee & Jefferson Davis and Confederate Memorial Day as legal state Holidays. Interesting, Rep. Greico--while seeking to erase a period of Florida history, has sponsored a bill that would take $300,000 from needed educational funds to fund a Holocaust Memorial in Miami-Dade, an area which already has a famed Jewish Museum that deals with this subject. Moreover, the state has for many decades spent millions of dollars to support the Florida Holocaust Education Commission and there are numerous Holocaust museums across Florida.

Florida SB 1302 by "Shev' Jones (D-parts of Broward & Miami Dade) is the companion to HB 6007.  Senator Jones has also filed SR1074 - 'White Nationalism-White Supremacy.'  He has also filed SB1052 - 'Use or Threatened Use of Force,' which would appear to end Florida's 'stand your ground law.' This bill would require anyone to 'retreat' when confronting an aggressor, not stand his/her ground.

Florida SB1116 'Removing Memorializations of the Confederate States of America' by Lauren Book (D Broward).  This bill is similar to HB6007 and SB1302 in that it would eliminate legal state holidays that commemorate the birthdates of Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis and Confederate Memorial Day. It would additionally remove legal protections to prevent the mutilation, defilement, desecration or the contemptuous abuse of Florida's Confederate flags or memorabilia.  She has also filed SB1170, a 17 page bill that would "require background checks for the sale OR TRANSFER of any ammunition." Sen. Book, along with many other colleagues, would make illegal all "assault weapons" and has filed SB370, an 18 page bill that would restrict magazine capacity and scores of weapons by name.  She has also filed SR1266 which would designate each February 14 as "Majorie Stoneman Douglas High School Memorial Day," while at the same time she is sponsoring a bill to eliminate recognition of Lee, Davis and Florida's Confederate heritage.
